Empty Space is a curated residency-based project for artists whose practice considers the construction of identity in contemporary life. Artists are offered support in researching and developing new works that explore aspects of how we as individuals interact with the cultures we inhabit.

Issues of identity are present in all aspects of life today. With marketing strategies offering lifestyles associated to their products, our spending habits are taken as short hand for socio-political groups. Obsession with celebrity is more present, and more accessible, than ever before, arguably blurring the distinction between performance and everyday life. As online commerce, identity theft and social networking sites, such as Myspace, Facebook and Secondlife, have become commonplace, the many ways in which we portray ourselves through the media has proliferated greatly. How does this affect how we construct our personalities? Which spaces do we inhabit? What forces influence our sense of individuality? And of those around around us?

During a series of residencies, artists will investigate such currents and questions. Their research and experimentation will be recorded on this website, recording the process and outcomes of their work. The first residents are London-based artists Oni & Ayo Oshodi.
