Identical twins Ayo and Oni Oshodi are artists/writers who fuse a practise inspired by music sampling and 'mash-ups' with post-modern literary strategies such as knowingly self-conscious and playful obscurity or lengthy digressive footnotes/endnotes (often as expansive as the text proper) - to upset notions of identity, post-colonialism and gender politics. They have announced their commitment to explore identity by the assassination of their own - they are currently adopting and temporarily emulating one artist's practice after another before rapidly moving on.
Most recently they have gained attention through their innovative film script 'Anne Ist', the film of which is due to be released in Spring 2008. The script developed through the creative donations (text, song lyrics, clothing) of over 80 'Myspace friends', in doing so destabilizing notions of authorship and the auteur.
For their SLG residency Ayo and Oni will explore the parallels between digitally based cultures - such as online social networking sites and the organic/biological organization systems found among communal insects. This research is an extension of their ongoing fascination with what they call 'ephemeral communities'...mobs, football supporters at a match, groupies attending a particular gig - as fleeting models of alternative societies on a micro scale.
